“The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.” - Jon Krakauer, Into the Wild
Road trips, be it a day long or a month long, is a smooth highway to the unbound happiness within us. To step out of the comfort zone, and still be comfortable, you need to do little bit of before end preparation. Let’s explore some dos and don’ts while preparing for a long road trip.
Mode of transport - Road trips are varied be it cycling in the rough terrain, exploring the foot hills with your Harley Davison or a car trip with your best friends through the deserts of Vegas, respecting the needs of your vehicle will take you a long way. Often it may be cheaper to rent a car from a national car rental agency like Discount Car than it is to use your own car. Professional inspection of every minute aspect should be done before you leave your door steps.
Once in midst of the wild, the last thing you’ll want is your vehicle breaking down. When hitch hiking, one should expect to walk long distances by foot. Getting access to public transport is a matter of luck.
As a preparation, the person should be habituated to walk and run; being physically fit is the key. When travelling to some foreign land, research about the routes, contact number of the local police and safety standards should be maintained. At the time of crisis they come out to be very useful.
Packing your back pack - On your road trip, your back pack is going to be your best friend. The first rule for that, is keeping the weight to minimum, no one wants to drag around a heavy bag. It kills half the fun.
Firstly, the selection of bag is important. The straps of the bag should be as such that, the weight is evenly distributed throughout the body. An extra strap on the waist works wonder. Bags with multiple chains and pockets should be chosen .While packing all the space available shouldn’t be filled up, always leave ample amount of space for souvenirs to be carried home.
When coming to the quality of back packs, it’s better to go for a waterproof one. Diverse terrain and unexpected weather conditions won’t come in your way, when travelling with your efficient backpack.
Health and Wealth - Stepping out from our comfort zone means, a little bargain with our health’s too. Hours of drive on roads, leaves you with a stiff and painful pain. A fast pain relief spray or a water bag comes in handy in those situations. It’s also advisable to carry, basic meds.
Though one is high with adrenaline rush before the day of the road trip, its best to get a minimum of six hours of sleep. It not only gives you an extra edge by giving your body and mind the pre required rest but keeps you awake and alert throughout the day.
Do remember to carry money, distributed in various pockets of the bag, that way if you drop a few, you will be safe
When done with the basic preparation, everything else should be left to the unpredictability of life, enjoying the trip to its fullest.
